Le 33 welcomes Private Choice for its 10th anniversary

Le 33 in Marseille is a “non-profit” gallery run by Isabelle Carta, which hosts Private Choice, founded by Nadia Candet, for a summer project to mark its 10 years of artistic commitment to the contemporary scene.

3 artists : Malo Chapuy, Katia Jacquet et Barbara Carnevale

Le 33 is located at 33 rue Saint-Jacques in Marseille’s traditional antiques district.

The decision to exhibit Malo Chapuy’s work at Le 33 is no coincidence. His small formats, his adoption of ancient techniques and his medieval aesthetic almost give the impression of having emerged from the reserves of a local antique dealer, as the rediscovery of a medieval treasure. His paintings are like enigmas: in addition to their anachronism, they conceal a multitude of details that reveal themselves to the attentive viewer.

Malo Chapuy and Katia Jacquet have each worked on the theme of photographs by the Bernd & Hilla Becher. Barbara Carnevale purifies the subject by extending the space.

…from rue Saint-Jacques to Cavaillon’s Saint-Jacques hill

“The starting point of the exhibition is a traumatic love episode. That of an 8-year-old child tripping over a Gallo-Greek amphora and picking up a perfectly intact Roman glass vase at the foot of a fallen tree, on Cavaillon’s Saint-Jacques hill. Fascinated by these two ancient objects, their origin and function, and impressed by their state of preservation after 2000 years of existence… he continued to collect fragments all around Cavaillon, carrying his bicycle and notebooks full of notes and drawings. Eventually, he knocked on the door of Abbé Joseph Sautel in Vaison-la-Romaine, and then of Sylvain Gagnière, an important archaeologist and future curator of the Popes’ Palace in Avignon.” O. Morand
